It’s week two for all but two teams in the Greater Valley Area tonight.

The LaFayette Bulldogs make their season debut at crosstown rival 1A No. 5 Lanett (1-0) Friday. LaFayette fell in a preseason matchup to Handley 40-15 last week. In the 2018 season-opener against Lanett, LaFayette lost 35-7. 

The game was a defensive battle between both teams in the first half before the Panthers broke out a couple of big plays in the second half to pull away with the victory. With a trio of former all-state players in Trevor Vines, JaQuavian Boston-Gaines and LaJareon Bryant graduating, all eyes shift to senior quarterback Jordan Walker for LaFayette this season.

Troup County also opens its regular season tonight against Ridgeland in Callaway Stadium. In 2018, the Tigers shutout Ridgeland 32-0 to begin the year. Troup County is led by one of the top players in the state in Auburn-commit Kobe Hudson, as well as the highly-recruited Andy Boykin. 

Beulah (1-0) returns home this week to host Ellwood Christian Academy. In 2018, the Bobcats shut out Ellwood 36-0. Last Friday, Beulah defeated Loachapoka 14-6 at home. Senior running back Chris Person rushed for 207 yards in the effort. Friday is the season-opener for Ellwood.

AISA No. 4 Chambers Academy (1-0) is hosting Tuscaloosa Academy (1-0) tonight. Tuscaloosa Academy is coming off of a 10-3 win over Lamar, a three-time defending state champion from Mississippi. The Knights are coached by former Valley High School all-state linebacker John Copeland. Chambers Academy is coming off a 36-7 win over Lee-Scott (0-1) last Friday night. Braxton Allen led all rushers, gaining 162 yards on the ground in the effort.

Springwood School (1-0) heads on the road to face Cornerstone Christian. The Wildcats are coming off a 24-7 week one win against Success Unlimited. In 2018, Springwood defeated Cornerstone 42-10. 

Valley (0-1) heads to 7A Smiths Station (1-0) tonight. In 2018, Smiths Station shutout Valley 27-0 in a game that was called off in the third quarter due to weather. The Rams used two-quarterbacks in week one, splitting drives between juniors Gabe Harmon and Will Kennedy. Sophomore wide receiver K.D. Hutchinson had the standout performance last Friday night, making plays on kick returns and in the wildcat formation.
