For Troup County Finance Director Buddy Cashwell, the last few months of 2019 are bittersweet with retirement just around the corner.

Last week, the Troup County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously in favor of lifting the hiring freeze to hire a new county finance director to replace Cashwell, who plans to retire at the end of the year.

Cashwell has worked for the county since September 2014, and in that time, he has worked with the Troup County Board of Commissioners through countless financial proposals, ranging from equipment purchases to use of Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds to the annual budget.

However, he said the people he’s worked with have impressed him the most.

“I appreciate now what people do here in this building,” Cashwell said. “People in all of the departments are very, very helpful.”

Cashwell said that he was impressed by how helpful county employees are in all the departments from the tax office to probate court, and the programs those departments champion in order to help Troup County citizens.

“The judges and the court employees really try to help people,” Cashwell said.

“Going to court is really not a good thing, but there are people who really try to help.”

While Cashwell was only with the county for a relatively short time, those who work with him say that he will be missed.

“Buddy will be truly missed here at Troup County,” County Manager Eric Mosley said. “I appreciate his dedicated service and great contributions as CFO during the last five years.We wish him the best in his retirement.”
