Low voter turnout in Tuesday’s election

Troup County’s voter turnout Tuesday night was 13.57 percent with 2,794 of the 20,593 registered voters taking part, according to results from the board of elections.
Twenty-seven percent of voters in West Point and Hogansville participated in Tuesday’s election, while 14 percent voted in LaGrange’s District 1 race.
Those numbers do not include provisional ballots, which are ballots cast by voters whose eligibility has been questioned at the polls. These must be validated after election day, according to Election Supervisor Andy Harper. The results will be finalized Tuesday, Nov. 12.
In Tuesday’s race in West Point, every vote mattered at the polls.
Sandra Thornton received 422 votes and Gerald Ledbetter received 397 votes to get on the West Point City Council, but the race was closer between the third and fourth candidates. Deedee Williams received 340 votes, topping Wiky Gladden by 12 votes for the final spot on the council.
West Point Mayor Steve Tramell ran unopposed and was re-elected.
Elsewhere in Troup County, Mandy Neese, Mark Ayers and Toni Striblin were elected as new council members in Hogansville.
Mark Mitchell won the district 1 race in LaGrange, while LeGree McCamey and Willie Edmondson ran unopposed.
County-wide election turnout was 13.57 percent for Tuesday’s election of local officials. The LaGrange District 1C election brought out only 14 percent of registered voters. District 2 races, where candidates ran unopposed, were at 5 percent.
West Point and Hogansville had the highest turnout, around 27 percent , both with close races. This is according to the county’s unofficial election report released Wednesday.
