Police say New Years was relatively quiet

For the most part, local law enforcement agencies had a rather quiet Christmas/New Year’s holiday period.

“It wasn’t too bad for us here in Valley,” Police Chief Tommy Weldon said. “There was no significant increase in arrest incidents. We had a couple of alcohol-related arrests, but no DUIs. We had a couple arrests for marijuana possession, but nothing major.”

Captain Kevin Carter of the West Point Police Department told The VT-N that law enforcement officers don’t want to jinx themselves by using the “Q word” (quiet) but that West Point had a status quo period over the holidays.

“Nothing major happened,” he said.

“We always get fireworks complaints around Christmas and New Year’s, but we usually don’t get after people unless they continue to do it late at night. In the past, there have been situations around July the Fourth or New Year’s Eve when we had to take fireworks away from kids when they were still doing it at 2 or 3 o’clock in the morning and their parents had passed out drunk inside.”

There were no drug or alcohol-related arrests in West Point over the holiday period, but there were some routine incidents such as acting on outstanding warrants.

Lanett had a rather uneventful holiday season as well.

“It was surprising, but we’re not complaining,” said Lt. C.J. Looser. “Alcohol and drug-related activity was way down from what you normally see over a holiday period.”
