We’ve written it before, but we’re going to say it again — local school systems taking the precautionary route in terms of weather is always the right decision.

Every school in Chambers County — Springwood School, Chambers Academy, the Chambers County School District and Lanett City Schools — was closed on Thursday as inclement weather was expected in the area. Thankfully, no tornadoes touched down in our area Wednesday night or Thursday, but several inches of rain fell and high winds brought down tree limbs and swept other debris into roadways.

There were tornado warnings in central Alabama overnight, including one in Shelby County. Thankfully, as of this writing, no injuries have been reported.

When it comes to closing school, administrators have to make quick decisions based on weather forecasts.

The Birmingham National Weather Service does a good job of providing constant updates, but for this system there was a lot of uncertainty on the timing and how it would impact Thursday.

However, schools made the right decision in the name of safety.

It’s difficult for working parents to plan for their children to be home during the week, but we’re sure parents would much rather their children be safe than be traveling back and forth to school in a downpour and heavy winds.

We applaud school administrators for being on the side of safety and ensuring students were safe as bad weather threatened the area.
