The LaFayette boys’ basketball team started off slow for them, scoring six points in its first four trips down the floor, but it changed gears three minutes into the first quarter, leading to an 86-20 win in the 2A area 9 championship game against Ranburne.
“We started a tad bit slow but once we got going, we got into a groove where we were able to shoot the ball well,” LaFayette head coach Obadiah Threadgill said. “We were flying around making Ranburne uncomfortable.”
The Bulldogs finished the first quarter with a 22-5 lead after the first quarter. Senior Markevious Moore was able to get open in the right corner for a couple of 3-point makes in the eight-minute quarter.
With the lead already up to 17, Threadgill was able to play his bench. The second unit finished with 31 points in the win.
“They played well tonight,” Threadgill said. “I wanted our second group to get some experience seeing things going a little slower because it’s’ going to come a lot faster in these next couple of games.”
The Bulldogs’ defense was tremendous in the second quarter, holding Ranburne to zero points the entire eight minutes of play.
Overall, Ranburne made just seven shots, six of which were from behind the 3-point line.
The Bulldogs’ offense continued its first-half roll in the second half, finishing with 24 points in the third quarter.
The key to the quarter was once again the defense, as LaFayette held Ranburne either one or no shots on a possession.
Seniors Corey Boston and Tae Burton led the Bulldogs in scoring, finishing with 15 and 14 points respectively.
The undefeated Bulldogs will host the winner of Sacred Heart vs Westbrook Christian.
