LANETT — While there has yet to be a confirmed case of COVID-19 in Chambers County, there has been confirmation of another deadly disease, one that has been with us for a long time — rabies.

According to Dr. Charles Harris of Riverside Veterinary Hospital, the state lab on Friday confirmed a case of rabies in the county. It took place on Wednesday, March 11.

One person was exposed to a rabid fox and is undergoing treatment.

People are urged to keep their distance from any wild animal they might see behaving in an unusual manner, such as not being afraid to be around humans.

Residents of Lanett and Valley are urged to contact their police departments and report anything out of the ordinary to their animal control officer.

Rabies is a viral disease that causes inflammation of the brain.

It is transmitted when an infected animal bites or scratches a human or other animals. Saliva from an infected animal can also transmit rabies if the saliva comes into contact with the eyes, mouth or nose.
