Alabama Governor Kay Ivey’s Safer at Home order announced earlier this week had some good news for locally owned retail businesses.

“We will have a number of them reopening in Lanett on Friday, and I know there will be a good many reopening in Valley as well,” Lanett Mayor Kyle McCoy said.

These businesses have been closed since the governor’s stay at home order several weeks ago.

McCoy said among the stores that will be allowed to reopen in Lanett on Friday are furniture stores, antique stores, jewelry stores, shoe stores, pawn shops, and some beauty supply stores.

Barber shops, beauty shops, tattoo parlors and nail salons will remain closed at least until May 15. Restaurants won’t be allowed to serve dine-in meals but can still have drive-in, curbside and delivery service.

“Our parks and recreation areas will remain closed,” McCoy said.

“The main thing is for us to stay safe, but it’s good to have our local businesses reopening.”

Valley Mayor Leonard Riley said he was pleased to see a number of retail businesses reopening in Valley.

“I’m ready for this stuff to be over,” he said.

“I’m ready to get a haircut.”

Riley said he was pleased how the city has held up during the shutdown.

“Our local economy has held up,” he said. “Sales taxes have been good, we haven’t had to lay off anyone or cut back their hours.”

Valley’s annual street resurfacing program is under way.

“We’ll be putting down the wearing surfaces on 31st and 33rd streets in Shawmut today,” the mayor said.
