OUR VIEW: Wednesday was a pretty cool moment in our community, although if you blinked, you might’ve missed it.
The 187th Fighter Wing of the Alabama Air National Guard Red Tails flew over EAMC-Lanier Hospital on Wednesday afternoon.
Valley was a late addition to the route — and a welcome one — as the Red Tails conducted a flight to honor frontline healthcare workers for the work they are doing to combat the COVID-19 virus.
You could make the argument that Chambers County has been the hardest hit by the coronavirus.
We’ve published the numbers over and over, but Chambers County has 21 total deaths and 304 total cases. Only four other counties have more deaths (Mobile, Jefferson, Lee and Tallapoosa).
Understanding that reality, so many in this community have been giving their time and energy to assist and support healthcare workers.
Since most of us don’t have a medical background, we unfortunately can’t go into the hospital and treat patients.
However, we can support the people who are by feeding them, honoring them in creative ways.
That’s why it was so encouraging to hear that the Red Tails would be flying over EAMC on Wednesday.
EAMC was gracious enough to let us on the roof for our coverage, and we had an elaborate plan to live video the planes flying by and to get photos.
Before we knew it — from the opposite direction we were aiming — the Red Tails flew over and we had to adjust quickly.
It was fast and impressive, and we’re sure EAMC appreciated the gesture.
We appreciate EAMC-Lanier being included on the flight schedule, and we join the Red Tails — and everyone else — in applauding our healthcare workers for the job they are doing.
