WEST POINT — Dr. Lacey Southerland and supporters of Hawkes Children’s Library have come up with a creative way to have a safe summer program for children. It’s called StoryTime on the Overlook and takes place at 10:30 a.m. on Thursdays. Instead of being inside the enclosed space of the library, the StoryTiime sessions have been outdoors underneath the pavilion between the library and city hall.

There’s ample room for social distancing for children and their parents and cool breezes off the nearby Chattahoochee have a way of making the warm days more bearable. The kids also like the cool fruit juices Miss Lacey brings in her juice box.

The program is co-sponsored by Hawkes Library and the Georgia Federation of Women’s Clubs.

Each StoryTime presentation has Southerland reading three children’s stories, showing them colorful pictures and asking them their thoughts on the story. There’s also a singalong session and some craft making. Children in the pre-K through fifth grade age group have been taking part in this. It’s been fun for them and is something they would have missed out on had all library activities been canceled due to COVID-19.

The theme for the program on July 9 was “Christmas in July,” this Thursday it was “Kings, Queens and Princesses” and meet week it will be “Cool Places to Live. The summer program wraps up on July 30 with a surprise theme.

The Overlook will be the setting for the quarterly meeting of the Chattahoochee Valley Historical Society. It will be a safe and appropriate backdrop for Henry Jacobs’ presentation of “West Point on the Chattahoochee. How it all began.” Jacobs is with Middle Chattahoochee Riverkeeper. The meeting will be taking place at 3 p.m. EDT on Sunday, July 26.
