Valley High School’s homecoming queen is no stranger to hard work, but it was all rewarding when she was celebrated by her classmates during the 2023-2024 homecoming game. 

Heavenly Overcash, daughter of Tabitha Overcash, shows determination and leadership skills inside and outside of school. In addition to the track team and wrestling team, she also throws javelin and discus. But that’s not her only passion.

“I love to sing outside of school,” she said. 

When she’s not being active, Overcash said she is an avid member of her church, and her favorite parts are praise and worship.

Not only is Overcash an athlete, but she is also a manager at Zaxby’s. In her job, she can use the skills she’s learned from being in JROTC, the colorguard and the drill team. 

“I love being able to tell people about myself,” Overcash said. “I feel like a big part of that I took away from it is learning how to say things and learning how to be consistent.”

In school, Overcash said her favorite subject is history. She said she feels like it’s important to learn.

“I like the way that history repeats itself, but it repeats itself in a different manner,” Overcash said. “I feel like there’s a lot that needs to be learned, but there’s a lot that we don’t know.”

With all the extracurricular activities, Overcash said there were times when it was hard to juggle all her responsibilities. With sports, school and work, she said her mental health was affected by the stress and anxiety she felt. 

Eventually, Overcash had to learn how to balance that time better. She also sought help to manage her anxiety. She said being able to be a leader in JROTC and colorguard helped build her confidence.

“It’s helped me overcome a lot because I don’t put myself down,” she said. “I lift myself up a lot in those situations.”

However, the homecoming queen said her family is also a huge support to her. Specifically, she said her mother, Tabitha Overcash, has been her best friend throughout her life and has been there for her. Her grandfather, Bobby Overcash, is also an important person in her life.

“They support me a lot in my clubs, and my sports, so they’re really my backbone,” she said. 

After high school, Overcash hopes to attend Southern Union State Community College for her degree in business and entrepreneurship. After that, she plans to get her real estate license. 

Overcash said she tends to be hard on herself when it comes to grades and sports, but the experience at the homecoming game reminded her of everyone who loves and supports her. 

“I don’t really get into like popularity contests or none of that but honestly, it made me feel good. It made me feel like I was really on top of the world,” Overcash said. “After everything that I’ve been doing and everything that I’ve had to overcome, I feel like it showed me that I got this, and I can keep going and the people around me love me.”
