The Eberne Myrthil era as Valley’s girls basketball coach continued its hot start as the Rams dominated Bullock County 52-27.
After taking a 14-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Rams went on an 11-0 run in the second quarter and controlled the game from then on.
Valley’s defense completely stifled the Hornets from the opening tipoff. Most of the Rams’ offense came off of turnovers, and Bullock County struggled to get the ball past halfcourt.
“That’s one of the things I think I told you the first time we spoke,” Myrthil said. “We’re all going to play tough defense. That’s all effort, that’s all attitude, that’s all energy and that’s what we want to bring to the table. I’m real proud of the girls, especially Makaila [Adams], Kayden [Dooley] and Zorriah Simpson. They played real tough up front.”
Every new head coach hopes to get off to a good start in their first season. Early on, the Rams have completely bought into Myrthil’s system, and the results have shown on the floor.
“I saw good improvement from last game to this game,” Myrthil said. “That’s our goal, to improve every game. We’re not looking at wins or losses. We’re looking to get better at different facets of the game every time. The girls got the chance to watch film this week, and they knew what this team did. They really paid attention in film study, and it showed tonight.
As a freshman, Kayden Dooley has been outstanding for the Rams early on, leading the team in scoring in each of the first two games. On Tuesday, Dooley finished with 18 points.
“She’s a basketball player,” Myrthil said. “She loves the game. Her love for the game is showing on the court. She’s got good leadership skills, but the reality is at her young age she’s only going to get better.”
Aniya Robinson followed behind Dooley with 12 points. Jamiah Johnson added another nine points for the Rams. Makaila Adams finished with eight points.
The win against Bullock County pushed Valley’s record to 2-0 on the season. Up next for the Rams is a game against LaFayette at home on Friday.
