Springwood continued its dominant streak on the hardwood as the Wildcats topped Chambers Academy 60-40 on the road.

After one period, it looked to be anybody’s game. Defense ruled the first period, and Chambers Academy held an 8-6 lead heading into the second frame.

From that point on, the Wildcats took over. Springwood outscored the Rebels 21-10 in the second period and never gave up the lead from that point.

Springwood and Chambers Academy have long been rivals, and that showed up with an intense atmosphere for the matchup on Thursday.

“I think they did alright,” Springwood coach Lisa Sampson said. “Little bit of a slow start, and that’s a credit to Chambers. They’ve got to learn to share the ball a little bit better.”

Micah Thomas led the Wildcats with 24 points on the night. Thomas hit two threes in the game and facilitated Springwood’s entire offense.

“Micah is a great player,” Sampson said. “He does it through defense, and he just does it quietly. It’s just a testament to the work he’s put in. Big things ahead for him, no doubt.”

Shooting was a struggle for Springwood as the Wildcats connected on just five of their 25 attempts from behind the arc.

Despite those misses, Springwood kept letting it fly. Offensive rebounds gave the team extra possessions on numerous occasions.

Chambers Academy had similar struggles from behind the arc, connecting on just three of the team’s nine attempts. Springwood only connected on seven of its 13 free-throw attempts, and the Rebels matched that number.

Grey Hayley led Chambers Academy with 11 points on the night. TJ Daniel followed Hayley with six points.

Daniel Westbrook added 16 points for Springwood. CJ Johnson had nine points, and Greg Johnson finished with eight points on the night.

The win improved Springwood’s record to 8-1 on the season, and the Wildcats face Lafayette Christian at home on Friday.
Chambers Academy sits at 1-3 with a matchup on the road against Macon East on Dec. 12.
