As the end of the year nears, so does the deadline for county residents to apply for exemption for solid waste collection fees. The application window is from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31 of 2023.
Chambers County Commissioner David Eastridge spoke about the deadline during the county commission meeting on Monday night. The exemption assists county residents who have a financial burden from the monthly service fees for solid waste service.
Contrary to common belief, Eastridge said, the application must be resubmitted each year to remain exempt for the service fees.
“A lot of people’s misconception is that if you fill it out one time, it’s from then on,” Eastridge said.
After Dec. 31, those who have not submitted their application will have to resume payment until they can reapply the following year.
Eastridge also reminded citizens that only individuals whose sole income for their household is from social security will qualify. Those receiving any kind of retirement, unemployment or pension benefits will be disqualified.
The application, which comes from the county’s code enforcement office, also reminds applicants to make sure they fill out the entire document. An incomplete form will not be processed.
This includes copies of the last three social security checks received or copies of the last three months of bank statements, if the check is direct deposited.
The application also states that individuals who owe any amount to Amwaste will not be approved until their account has been cleared. The number for Amwaste in West Point is 706-298-7274.
