LANETT — Valentine’s Day was celebrated at the Lanett Senior Center on Wednesday with the crowing of a Valentine’s Day king and queen and their court. Chattahoochee Hospice chaplain Rev. Michael Stiggers did the crownings and placed banners on members of the court.
All seniors present had the chance to be a winner. Names were drawn from a hat.
This year’s king is Floyd Aikens. He and wife Floy are very active members of the senior center. They have been married for 68 years.
The queen is Jewel Nelloms, another member who is at the center almost every day.
The king’s court includes first runner-up Staley Hill, second runner-up Herschel Allen and third runner-up Alex Page. The queen’s court is made up of first runner-up Brenda Wright, second runner-up Elizabeth Davis and third runner-up Neva Van Meter.
Rev. Stiggers, who’s also the pastor at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church near LaFayette, discussed how love is defined in the Bible. It’s stated best, he said, in the first two commandments: “Thou shalt love thy God with all thy heart, all thy soul and all thy mind” and “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.”
There was lot of head nodding and amens to that.
Stiggers added that four commandments are about an individual’s relationship with God and six are about and individual’s dealings with others.
On a lighter note, Stiggers said he would never forget about the term common denominator from being in Mrs. Talbot’s math class at West Point High School. The denominator is the bottom number of a fraction. It tells how many equal parts an item is divided into.
“Love is a common denominator,” Stiggers said. “You love God and you love your neighbor. If you love God you can’t help but love your neighbor.”
In another humorous vein Stiggers joked that married men must be wary of a wife’s Jedi mind trick when it comes to Valentine’s Day. “If you ask her what she wants for Valentine’s Day and she tells you you don’t have to get her anything, you’d better not go home that day and not have her something,” he said.
The Jedi mind trick is from the Star Wars movies and involves harnessing the power of the Force and having the spiritual energy to have extraordinary abilities.
When it comes to your wife or sweetheart, any guy should know they shouldn’t let February 14th pass without doing something special for her.
