Rebels edge past Evangel at home

Chambers Academy edged out a 6-5 win over Evangel Christian at home on Thursday after a late rally from the Rebels.
Chambers Academy came into the bottom of the fifth inning tied at five. Luke Tarver found his way on base after being hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Eli Whorton hit a line drive single with one out to score Tarver and give the Rebels a one-run lead.
Evangel held the lead early after a two-run blast put the Lightning up 2-0 in the top of the first inning. The Rebels came roaring back in the bottom half of the inning as Grey Hayley drove Payton Yerta in on a double. Tarver then drove Hayley in with a single, and another run scored an error later in the inning. Landon Hand rounded out the scoring in the inning as he drove in Grant Jones to give Chambers Academy a 4-2 lead.
Chambers Academy added to the lead in the bottom of the second inning as Yerta scored on a wild pitch. Evangel struck back in the top of the third with two runs to cut the lead back to two. Then, Evangel Christian tied the game with two runs scoring on an error in the top of the fifth inning.
Grant Jones got the start on the mound for Chambers Academy. Jones struck out five batters and allowed three earned runs in four innings of work.
Kyle Hand came in relief for Jones and struck out seven and allowed just three hits. Hand allowed three runs, but none of the runs were earned.
The win pushed Chambers Academy to 4-3 on the season. The Rebels are over .500 for the first time since their season-opening win over Springwood. Up next for Chambers Academy is a home game against Coosa Valley on March 5.
