LANETT — More than 30 people turned out for Saturday’s second Love Our Lanett neighborhood clean-up day. The first one took place on Jan. 13 and had similar participation. The second one was originally set for Saturday, March 9 but was delayed due to stormy weather in the forecast. It was rescheduled for Saturday, and the weather could not have been better.

“It was a good day,” said Lanett Restoration Committee member Martha Scott. “I think we got lots of litter picked up, and we appreciate all the volunteer help we got. It was good to see coaches and students from Lanett High and Springwood helping us. We also had a group from Spring Road Christian Church. I am encouraged by the responses we have gotten from our two clean-up days. This is something we need to keep plugging away at. We are grateful for the support we are getting from the City of Lanett. Mayor Heard and members of the council have been most supportive of what we are trying to do.”

Mayor Jamie Heard and the council’s clean-up champion, Angelia Thomas, were there to do what they could to help out. 

Also on hand were Council Member Tony Malone, City Clerk/Treasurer Deborah Gilbert and City School Board Member David Gagnon. Springwood’s Michael Plank,  Lanett High School football coach Chip Seagle, and Lanett Junior High coach Qua Boyd were there leading their students in the litter pick-up.

Help was provided by men from the city’s Cemetery & Grounds Department.

Lanett resident Steve Wheeler assigned districts for volunteer groups to clean up. Areas on the north side of town covered included Lanier Avenue, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 10th and 11th streets.

Everyone gathered at city hall at 9 a.m. and were in the clean-up zone by 9:15 a.m. The Rev. Fred James, pastor of Pilgrim Baptist Church, led a group prayer before everyone headed out to their designated area.

“I want to thank all of you for being here this morning,” Heard said. “I know we can get a lot done today.”
