For the third straight season, Springwood’s boys soccer team is advancing to the AISA state championship game as the Wildcats beat Trinity Christian 2-0 in Montgomery.
It was a back-and-forth defensive battle for the better part of two halves. Neither team found the back of the net in the first half, and the game was close to going to penalties before the dam finally broke for Springwood.
The deciding shot came with just over four minutes remaining. Trinity had the entire team back on defense, but with a trip to the state championship on the line, the Wildcats found a way. Owen Han took a shot from well outside of the box and found the back corner of the net to give Springwood a 1-0 lead.
Then, less than a minute later, Guilherme Teixeira sealed the game for the Wildcats as he broke free and had just the keeper to beat. Teixeira put the ball left of the keeper and gave Springwood a decisive 2-0 lead.
The Wildcats won the state championship last season after finishing as the state runner-up in 2022. Springwood will face Fort Dale Academy in the state championship. The Wildcats are now 12-1 on the season.
The two teams have faced off twice this season, with the Wildcats winning the first matchup 6-1. The Eagles handed Springwood its only loss of the season on April 8 in a 4-3 game.
