LANETT — The James A. Hardy Gym was the setting for Friday’s second annual senior fish fry sponsored by Mayor Jamie Heard. The Qui Vive Civic Club did an excellent job of providing a comfortable, elegant atmosphere for the seniors to enjoy. Helping them were Natalie Fannings of the after-school program and life guards at the pool.

More than a dozen tables were set up on the gym floor. The Qui Vive members served the guest plates including catfish filets with cole slaw and French fries, your choice of sweet tea or cold water, topped off with some tasty banana pudding.

Council Member Tamalita Autry said an opening prayer and Mayor Heard told everyone to enjoy each other’s company, the good food and just have a good time.

“We have a good crowd here today,” he said. “I want to thank you all for coming. I also want to thank Rev. Rodney Jones and Richard Chapman for doing the cooking.”

Herschel Allen. president of the Lanett Senior Advisory Council, thanked the mayor for putting on the fish fry.

“In my opinion, we couldn’t find a better person to run this city than Jamie Heard,” he said. “He is so supportive of our senior center and backs everything we do. Senior citizens in Lanett are fortunate to have a mayor like Jamie Heard and a senior center manager like Sandra Thornton,”

Members of the Qui Vive Civic Club who were present include Council Member Tamalita Autry, Hilda Carlisle, Lisa Farrow, City Clerk/Treasurer Deborah Gilbert, Shirleye Greenwood, Cantrece Nelson and Corinthian Woody. Other members include Gretchen Holloway, Jo Frances Jackson, Marjorie King, Mary Moody, Alysia Mwkuta and Rudine Smith.

The annual fish fry is a way to celebrate Older Americans Month, which recognizes the contributions of older Americans, highlights aging trends and reaffirms commitments to serving older adults.

May has been recognized as Older Americans Month since 1965.
