LaFayette citizens can mark their calendars as the city’s community house will soon be open to the public, according to an update given to the city council at Monday’s meeting. 

Street and Sanitation Superintendent George Green addressed the renovations that have been made in the past months to get the community house ready for the public. 

One of the main projects with the building was ensuring that it was ADA-compliant. Green said a ramp has been installed and both entrances are now handicap accessible. Handrails have been installed. The heating and air system has been upgraded as well.

A stove is functioning in the building. Council member Terry Mangram asked if there was a fridge; Green said he didn’t know. 

According to the mayor and council, the city has received many requests to use the building for community and family events. 

Council member Tammie Williams said that if the community house is ready to be rented out, then the city needs to contact the citizens who have been requesting it. She said she believes the first person to request using it was Yolanda Ratchford, who spoke at a past council meeting to ask if she could use the building for doing after-school art activities. 

Mayor Kenneth Vines suggested that the council members take a tour of the building to walk through it one more time before officially opening it up to the public.
