Grand Jury gives report on Chambers County jail, courthouse

The Chambers County Circuit Court’s Grand Jury gave its report on the Chambers County Detention Facility and Chambers County Courthouse, including recommendations for both facilities based on physical inspections.
The Grand Jury report was given on Aug. 12, 2024. The physical inspections for the detention center found it adequately ventilated and suitable for inmates. In the report, the Grand Jury commended Sheriff Jeff Nelson for his maintenance and operation of the jail.
The report listed the following recommendations for the jail:
- A complete renovation for the entire jail is recommended to address the following issues:
- Water leaks need to be repaired.
- There are only 52 beds.
- There are two female housing options but only one is usable, meaning only 16 female inmates can be housed.
- Beds are not sanitary and in poor condition.
- Fix mold issues.
- There are water going into electrical panels.
- Fix male unit that is unable to be used.
- Remedy insect issues.
- Bathroom ceilings and paper towel dispensers are not in good condition.
- More jail personnel are needed.
- Old laundry room is not functional.
- The control room has a terrible smell.
- The basement breaker box has extreme leaks.
As for the Chambers County Courthouse, the Grand Jury recommended an increased stipend for jurors summoned for trial jury or grand jury service. They also commented that the website for the jury service needs to be updated.
