VALLEY — The Valley Arts Council normally hosts an art show during the fall of the year. They will be doing one again this year but with some slight differences. It will be a little bit later than normal, and it won’t be a judged show.
“It will be taking place the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, November 2nd and 3rd, and we’re calling it ‘Fall Into the Holidays,’” said Arts Council President Suzie Britt. “It’s for artists and crafters in the 18 and older age group and will be a pre-holiday opportunity for them to sell their works. We will have lots of local artists and craft people here along with some authors and former residents of the Valley.”
One of the former residents who will be displaying artistic works will be Darryl Pebbles.
Peebles grew up in the Langdale community and graduated from Valley High and Auburn University. He went on to earn a Masters in Divinity from the Wake Forest Theological Seminary and served four congregations in four communities for close to a half century. He also spent many years as a firefighter, has authored several books and competed nationally in track and field events until he was 55. He has acted in several films and appeared with famed NASCAR drivers Richard Petty and Tony Stewart in a Goody’s TV commercial. He even did a magic show to much applause on Jay Leno’s late night TV show.
“Darryl has lots of friends and relatives who still live here,” Britt said. “They are all looking forward to his visit to the Valley.”
The Fall Into the Holidays Show will be taking place inside the big gym at Valley Community Center. The Saturday, November 2nd showing will be going on between the hours of 10 a.m. till 5 p.m. EDT. The Sunday portion will be 1 to 5 p.m.
“We are excited about it. It’s shaping up to be a really good show,” Britt said. “We will have spaces for up to 60 artists and crafters. On display and for sale will be works of art in oil, watercolor, acrylic, mixed media, drawings in pencil, ink and charcoal and photography. We will also have someone there who makes works of art out of metal.”
The fiber arts will include needlework, crochet and quilting. There will also be people there who make pottery, ceramics and even jewelry.
A main attraction to the show will be Mary Joy’s Lemonade Stand. The Moosman family of West Point will have some of their tasty lemonade along with homemade cookies. They will be representing the Mary Joy Scholarship Foundation.
“We will have them in the center of the gym,” Britt said. “Their lemonade stand will be very pretty with lots of yellow and white balloons.”
Forms to enter the show are available on the Valley Arts Council’s Facebook page or can be gotten by contacting Britt at suziebritt@knology.net or by calling her at (334) 333-7073. The deadline to enter will be October 7th.
“We will have the gym decorated in both the colors of fall and Christmas,” Britt said. “We are expecting a fun atmosphere and an enjoyable experience for anyone who comes out. We want to build back community participation in events like this they way it used to be.”
The Arts Council will be having an art show for those who are 18 and younger in February. “It will be different from what we have done before,” Britt said. “We will be calling it Make Your Mark, and it’s not just for artists. We will have a division for writers as well. We will be welcoming those who have written short stories, essays, plays and poems. We want to get local schools involved in this.”
