Traffic is moving along both new bridges over Highway 18 and vehicles are moving along all three roundabouts located off I-85 at Exit 2 in West Point.

Right now, there’s one-lane traffic across each bridge and the roundabouts are marked with the orange-and-white barrels.

“The traffic flow is so much better now,” Mayor Steve Tramell said.  “There’s very little stopping now.”

Roundabouts have been common in Europe for many years, but they are a coming thing in the U.S.

There’s an estimated 10,000 of them across the United States and the numbers are growing steadily.

There’s a learning curve involved in driving through them if you’re not used to it, but one you get adjusted it’s nice not to have to stop for long minutes at red lights.

It’s also much safer. Traffic moves at slower speeds at roundabouts, and there’s no chance of being t-boned at an intersection by a car running a red light.
