During the school board meeting on Wednesday night, the Chambers County School Board reviewed the school state report cards from 2023-2024, which Superintendent Casey Chambley said will be released officially by the state Board of Education in the coming weeks.
Chambley shared the report cards with the principals of the district last week and discussed the findings. To the other board members, Chambley explained that the scores have seen improvement.
“We attribute a lot of that to number one coming out of COVID,” Chambley said, adding that the reading coaches and math interventionists recently installed in the schools have also made a difference.
Chambley said that in comparison to the previous year, “every single category in the district improved.” That includes the graduation rate and the CCRI rate (College and Career Readiness Indicators).
At the end of the meeting, Chambley highlighted some findings from the scores in his superintendent’s report:
“Typically, in our county, our minority population would be the population that would be suffering or receiving the lower grades in our achievement and graduation rates and CCRI, and they’re not any longer.”
“That was a big deal for us to see, especially dealing with still the ongoing desegregation issues that we’re dealing with,” Chambley added. “That was a plus to see our ELL (English Language Learners) populations are actually performing very well, very well in the absentee category, coming to school, showing up, and their growth rates. So, those were performing really well.”
Chambley said that the county school district has seen a “massive influx” of Hispanic students and that they are performing well on state scores and with growth rates. The superintendent added that the school board is still having issues hiring bilingual staff who can help bridge the communication gap, which he said is a statewide problem.
