Chambers County has been spoiled with rivalry games lately. For the second time in as many weeks, Springwood School and Chambers Academy clashed. Following duel wildcat wins from both the boys and girls squad at the Chambers holiday tournament, the two schools meet again in Lanett on Tuesday night.
GIRLS:
The Springwood girls are quite literally unbeatable this season. The team is now 12-0 on the season. They followed their tournament win by beating county rivals, Chambers Academy 55 to 22 on their home court.
Springwood quickly separated themselves scoring 26 points to Chambers’ 12. However, it was the third quarter that saw both offenses click. Springwood put 21 points up and Chambers 10. Things slowed down in the fourth, allowing the Wildcats to cruise to a win.
“Their transition buckets, their buckets off of steals are big,” said head coach Lisa Sampson. “When they turn up their defense and get steals, we’re a very good team.”
Sampson said she “always looks to our leaders,” Little and Patillo, but it was the defensive efforts of Estella Campos, Caroline Van Shoor and Vega Monsalve that put the game to bed.
Shalexia Little had another phenomenal night, scoring 26 points. The Wildcats had luck from the three-point line, with four players putting up threes. Tori Patillo also had a great night with 14 points.
Chambers took advantage of free throws, scoring 10 of 14 from the line. However, they struggled in the run of play. Olivia Daughtrey led the team with eight points, four of those from free throws. she was the only Rebel to have more than one basket outside of a free throw.
BOYS:
The boy’s side was equally entertaining, as the Wildcats beat their Rebel counterparts 79-37 in an electric game from Springwood.
Chambers had a tough time penetrating Springwood’s defense. 15 of the team’s 37 points came from behind the three-point line. Springwood seem to keep coming out on top both in steals and rebounds.
Like the girls, the boys put the game away early, only allowing six points in the final frame. Chambers’ best quarter, the second, saw them add 14 points to the board, however, Springwood put up 25 points many of which came in the final minutes of the half on quick transition plays. From then on Springwood had the momentum.
“We talk about defense. It’s got to start with our guys defensively first and rebounding,” Sampson said. “And today, they took it up a notch.”
Jake Reams had a good night for the Rebels, leading the team with 15 points. Hunter Andrews had 10 on the night.
Springwood shared the wealth. CJ Johnson led the Wildcats with 22 points, Kori Key had 14 points, Greg Johnson put up 12 and Jio Rowe had 11. Clarence Moore had three three-pointers on Tuesday and Wes Carden had a pair.
Springwood is on the road to take on Macon East on Thursday. Chambers will travel to Hooper Academy on Jan. 10.
