The board members of the Chambers County School District received gifts recognizing them at the first school board meeting of the year this week in honor of board member appreciation month.

In her first meeting in her new role, Superintendent Dr. Sharon Weldon thanked the board members for their years of service and hours of training.

“We just wanted to take a moment to have an opportunity to tell you guys thank you, and not just us, but also the schools,” Weldon said.

Each board member received a goody bag put together by the schools of Chambers County.

“And I think our schools respond because they realize how important what each one of you guys are doing, how important it really is,” Weldon said. “And I just want to take a minute so everybody really understands the commitment they have.”

Weldon said that the board member position is a bigger commitment than some might think.

Board President Vicki Leak has been on the board since 2016 and in that time has accrued 108 and a half education hours. She is nearing level four in leadership.

LaShae Herring, District 3 board member and vice president, has been serving since 2018. While there, she has gained 218 hours and is a level four in leadership. She has also attained master level in 2023 and 2024.

“That’s awesome, and we appreciate that commitment,” Weldon said during the meeting.

Candace Lyons, District 2 board member, joined the board in 2019. Already she has reached level three, and gained 122 and a half hours.

Jay Siggers, District 4 board member, has been on the board since 2021. He is at level one in leadership. Jennifer Hunt, District 6 board member, has been on the board since 2022 and has gained 24 hours.

For Reco Newton, District 1, the Wednesday meeting was only his second, as he was only elected to the board last year.

“We do just want to thank you guys for your dedication and service, and I know that at times, your sacrifice,” Weldon said. “Because I’m sure every one of you could tell right now things that you could be doing, and you’re sitting here away from your family and answering a call, and we just really appreciate it.”
