There are three teams from the Greater Valley Area in the Alabama Sports Writer Association (ASWA) new state rankings this week, while three additional teams received votes.

Lanett remains the 1A No.1 after a comeback win against Wadley on Friday night. Last season, Wadley went undefeated in the regular season before falling short in the 1A state championship game. This week, the Panthers travel to face winless Autaugaville.

LaFayette moved up in the 2A rankings from the No. 8 slot to No. 7 a week after shutting out Vincent, 40-0. This week, the Bulldogs travel to No. 6 Thorsby in a big region matchup.

Chambers Academy stood pat at No. 4 in AISA competition. The Rebels piled on their 28th consecutive regular-season victory with a 57-7 win over Cornerstone Christian. Chambers head football coach Jason Allen said this week will signal the start of the toughest stretch of the regular season for his team. Chambers will go up against 2-1 Southern Academy at home this Friday night.

Valley, Beulah and Springwood School received votes in the 5A, 3A and AISA polls, respectively.

The votes are a sign of progress for the Rams, who are off to a 2-1 start after a thrilling season-opening win at 1A No. 1 Lanett and a convincing 40-21 win over Beauregard last week. Freshman running back B.J. Baker continues to turn head in the East Alabama region after running for just shy of 200 yards against the Hornets.

Beulah is on a roll to begin the season. With senior quarterback Lonzie Portis returning to the fold this season to go along with dominant senior athlete Caden Dowdell, the Bobcats have already matched last season’s win total and outscored opponents 96-32 in its 3-0 start this year. Beulah hosts 1-1 Prattville Christian this Friday.

The Wildcats of Springwood were previously No. 10 before losing to Edgewood 44-13 at home last Friday night. Springwood head football coach John Gartman said that the Wildcats just had a hard time hemming Edgewood in, which exploded for a four-touchdown run in the matchup. Springwood now travels to face off against AISA No. 2 Autauga Academy this week.
