Church honors Lanett football

- BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS — On the Sunday morning following Lanett High’s 33-15 win over Leroy in the Alabama Class 2A state championship game, Ebenezer Baptist Church hosted a Breakfast of Champions to commend members of the team and their coaches for what they’d done this season in going 15-0 and winning the state title. The education wing of the church was packed as church members celebrated with the players, coaches, cheerleaders, band members, Booster Club members, fans and parents. The Rev. Dr. Jesse J. LANETT — On Sunday, Dec. 10, Ebenezer Baptist Church honored the Lanett High football team with a Breakfast of Champions. Members of the team, their coaches, band members, cheerleaders, teachers, school administrators, members of the Booster Club, parents and church members celebrated the team’s winning the 2017 Class 2A state championship.
The mass Sunday school class and breakfast was held in the education wing of the church the Sunday morning following the Panthers’ 33-15 win over Leroy in the championship game. Lanett High students, including members of the team, conducted the service.
Kaleb Thomas, a junior cornerback on the team, read from scripture, freshman linebacker Travaunta Abner led prayer; cheerleader Lateness Thomas conducted meditation, and Shunbril Abner, along with Aqua and Perry Jones welcomed everyone. Perry is a freshman offensive guard on the team.
Rev. Stanley Roberts Sr., who is president of the Lanett Athletic Booster Club, summarized a lesson that is in Acts 13: 1-12. Verses 1-5, he said, have Simeon and his followers accepting an assignment, verses 6 and 7 have them facing a roadblock and 8-12 have them coming up with a counter plan.
Coach Story’s Panthers, he said, accepted an assignment, prayed over it and set out to accomplish it. They faced opponents along the way but overcame them. “The Lord’s hand was in control,” Roberts said. “Lucius, Barnabas, Simeon and the Panthers all had faith. When you have faith and you believe it, you can achieve it.”
On behalf of the team, senior defensive lineman Tristan Meadows expressed gratitude for everyone coming to the breakfast and for their support throughout the year.
