LANETT — A man was arrested by Lanett police officers over the weekend after allegedly raping and assaulting an unidentified female victim.
Detreile O’monte Devon Jones, 22, of Lanett, on charges of first degree rape, first degree sexual assault, first degree burglary and third degree assault.
Lanett police said they received a call to the 800 block of South 2nd Ave. in the early morning hours of Sunday, Sept 23. After arriving at the location of the call, officers located the female victim who reported that while staying at a residence on South 3rd Avenue she woke up to find Jones armed with a knife, police say.
Lanett Police Chief Johnny Wood said that the assault took place at the residence on 3rd Ave. and the victim called from the residence on South 2nd Ave. after fleeing the scene.
“We are literally talking not even a block… She had no way to call so she went to where she could call,” he said.
The victim reported to officers that Jones had assaulted her and fled the residence. The Lanett Criminal Investigation Division processed the scene and further interviewed the victim. Following that, warrants containing the aforementioned charges were obtained for Jones.
“He was charged with burglary for entering the residence,” Wood said. “Because he entered the residence and committed the crime therein, that is the basis of the burglary charge.”
Police initiated a search for Jones, who was later located at 610 S 3rd Ave. When officers attempted to arrest him he refused to comply.
“When the officers confronted him and said that they had warrants, he refused to comply with officers to get down and put his hands behind his back,” Wood said.
He was charged with resisting arrest on scene and taken to the Chambers County Jail where he is awaiting a bond hearing. Police were unable to comment on the condition of the victim.
