LANETT — Saturday was the first day of autumn, and some members of the Huguley United Methodist Church spent part of this first day of a new season having a bake sale in the parking lot of El Rio Restaurant in Lanett.
The church is well known in the local area on their having hosted lunches on the first Friday of the month. Some of the same cooks who helped prepare meals for that very popular program had baked good items on sale Saturday. They included pound cakes, chocolate cakes, banana bread, brownies, chocolate fudge, cobblers and cookies.
“Everything here was made by the women, and some of our men, at the church,” said Pastor Al Smith.
One of the cooks, Donna Abney, used her craft making skill as part of the sale. Her gumball and candy machines make for unusual, and popular, Christmas presents. Another member of the church, Larry Clanton, is quite skilled with power saws. He had a cross he’d made from a pine tree that was very well done.
Rev. Smith wanted to thank the public for stopping by on Saturday, visiting with everyone and picking out a treat to take home with them.
“We want everyone to know that we are going to have a gospel singing at the church this coming Saturday, Sept. 29,” he said. “We will have both solo singers and groups there. Everyone is invited, and we’re sure it will be a blessing for you.”
