THE JOY SUNDAY SCHOOL Class of First Baptist Church Shawmut met at the home of the class teacher, Liz Landreth, in the Huguley community for their annual brunch on December 9, 2017. Several of the ladies did not get to attend due to the weather as steps had ice on them and falls were not needed during the Christmas season or anytime.  They were really missed as were the ones on trips getting in early Christmas celebrations with their family members.

A delicious meal of breakfast casseroles, one that was gluten free, ham, biscuits, eggs, grits, banana nut muffins, cheese, cantaloupe, grape jelly, pear butter with orange juice and coffee was enjoyed. The ladies enjoyed sitting around the table catching up on the news and remembering times past how they celebrated Christmas.

After everyone was stuffed and naps were discouraged, the ladies signed Christmas cards to be mailed to shut-ins, nursing home patients and others. In looking at the list of cards mailed last year, it was noted that 9 of the ones on the list are spending Christmas in heaven this year. Know they are greatly missed by family and friends.

Those making it in spite of the weather and having a wonderful time were: Mary Ann Fuller, Elizabeth Hall, Dot Williams, Marilyn Suttles and Margaret Ennis and the hostess, Liz Landreth with Terry Landreth enjoying the meal also.  Merry Christmas from the Joy Sunday School Class Shawmut First Baptist Church

THE GOLDEN HEIRS of First Baptist Church Shawmut met Tuesday December 12th in the Family Life Center for their Christmas program. Mrs. Billie Jean Clem welcomed everyone and led the group in singing the theme song “This Is The Day”.

Lois Passmore opened the meeting with prayer.  Liz Landreth read the minutes of the previous meeting. It was reported that the goodie stockings had been put together by a group who met earlier to get them ready in time for the deacons to deliver them to some deserving individuals on Deacon Visitation Day. Those taking part in this project were Linda and Bobby Tolbert, Mary Ann Fuller, Billie Jean Clem and Liz and Terry Landreth.

Following a time of prayer requests, the program was turned over to Nita Abney who introduced the speaker, Rev. Chuck Anderson who spoke on Christmas. He said we as Christians are soldiers and Christmas is the ‘beachhead’ set up to liberate everyone from Satan’s bondage.

This time of the year when the focus is on Christmas, we have a wonderful opportunity to tell everyone just why we celebrate Christmas. In the first century, the Roman ruler, Caesar, proclaimed himself as lord and at sporting events, everyone had to stand and proclaim “Caesar is Lord” or their life could be in danger. Some were placed in the arena with lions for failing to acknowledge Caesar as lord instead of Jesus who is Lord.

During the program, several songs were sung beginning with “Joy to the World”, “O Come Emanuel”, “Gloria”, “One Day” and “Hark the Herald Angels Sing.” Telling others about our Savior in this season where we celebrate should be a vital part of our life as Christians.

After the program, Bobby Tolbert closed the meeting with prayer and asked God’s blessing on the food they were about to enjoy.
