WEST POINT — In a game that looked brutal for the first 30 minutes of play, Allen’s 91-84 overtime decision over Point proved to feature an exciting finish.

Junior guards Sae’Quahn Rogers and Jamon Moore fueled the Skyhawks’ comeback in the second half to cut the Allen double-digit deficit down to one.

“Our group showed a lot of resilience at the end of regulation,” Point men’s head basketball coach Darryl Slack said.

Rogers then knocked down a three to tie the game at 57 with 8:31 remaining in regulation.

“Sae’Quahn was Mr. Consistency, he’s been playing like this for us all year,” Slack said. “[We] have some guys hurt, and he’s doing whatever it takes for the team to win. For Sae’Quahn to knock down a big three, make a few other plays, grab some key rebounds, it’s fitting for him to play this way because he’s so focused.”

The Skyhawks then took the lead after knocking down a jumper on an apparent push off the was not called with 4:08 to go in the game. That non-call would eventually come back to haunt Point, as Allen seemingly got away with a few reach-in calls down the stretch.

“I think we got to caught up in the refs making calls for us,” Slack said. “We were a little bit sped up. We were playing faster than we would normally play. A little bit out of control. We had way too many turnovers throughout the duration of the game, but I think down the stretch, we didn’t even get a shot off in overtime.”

A rowdy Point University student section was present at the game wearing red in order to raise awareness of domestic violence. Students jumped, screamed and waved towels while Allen players missed four consecutive free throws near the end of the fourth quarter.

“I appreciate them coming out and supporting us,” Slack said. “There was a big crowd with the student body, and again, we’re working hard to get on the winning side of things. We appreciate the student body, the faculty, staff, everyone who’s still sticking with us, and are still supporting. It’s important. I don’t think we would have a chance to win that game if we didn’t have the crowd behind us to give us that energy that we need.”

The students stood for the end of regulation, and the entire overtime period to cheer on the Skyhawks. Wednesday’s loss gave the Point men’s basketball team a 0-10 overall record, and a 0-5 record in conference play this season. Due to a multitude of injuries, the team has only been able to play six or seven men from its 12-man roster.

The Skyhawks return to action on Saturday for another conference game at No. 9 Union College for a 6 p.m. EST. tipoff.
