The first basketball prep rankings of the calendar year were not kind to the teams in the Greater Valley Area.

The LaFayette and Springwood girls basketball teams both received nominations to be ranked in their classifications, but no local schools were listed in the top 10.

Entering Thursday, the LaFayette girls are 13-3 coming off of an impressive 59-37 win over Horseshoe Bend on Tuesday night. The Bulldogs squeezed out of Lanett with a 40-38 win thanks to the free throws from Nadya Heard this past Saturday. LaFayette returns to action Thursday at Woodland High School.

The Springwood Wildcats are 7-4 entering Thursday night’s matchup against Evangel. The team is led by junior McKayla Barber.

In boys basketball, Lanett and LaFayette were both ranked earlier this year but have fallen out of the top 10. The Panthers, previously ranked as the 1A No. 10 team, have been victims of a tough schedule. Lanett is 5-4 with losses to 7A Central and then-undefeated LaFayette, but the Panthers have won three straight after victories over LaFayette, Loachapoka and Notasulga. Saturday’s win over LaFayette is the type of performance that head coach Richard Carter said that he wanted to see from his team all season long. Lanett’s biggest advantage is the team’s size, with six-foot-six-plus post players Dee Dobbs, Jayshon Burton, Cameron and Zameron Boozer.

LaFayette, previously ranked as the 2A No. 9 team, went on a three-game skid after starting the season 15-0.

“We have to figure out what we’re made of,” LaFayette boys head basketball coach Obadiah Threadgill said after the Bulldogs loss to Lanett on Saturday. “Right now, we’re on the canvas. We’re feeling sorry for ourselves. We’re showing the same confidence that we once showed, and for good reason because we lost three in a row. We have to get back to what got us to 15-0, which is playing hard and playing sound.”

The Bulldogs took Threadgill’s postgame advice and used it to fuel a 46-19 victory over Horseshoe Bend on Tuesday night. LaFayette is now 16-3, and the boys are now on the road to face Woodland tonight.

The Chambers Academy boys team is one to look for in the future rankings. Head coach Jason Allen has the Rebels off to a 9-2 start after defeating Cornerstone 58-32 on Tuesday night. The team lost to AISA No. 5 Lakeside in a tournament championship over the winter break, but the Rebels have a chance to redeem themselves Thursday at AISA No. 2 Evangel. Chambers is led by sophomore Payton Allen, senior Colton Hand and junior Raphe Daniel.
